The Jackson Arthritis Center
Continuing Education
Outreach

Update 9/5/2006: We regret that this program is currently on hold until further notice.

HISTORY

H M Reynolds, MD, President of the Foundation from 1999 to early 2006, specialized in orthopaedic adult hip and knee surgeries. His dedication to research, education, and patient outreach related to this field led him to create the Internship Program in honor of Douglas Dickson, MD.

PROGRAM

The interns of the six week long program will participate in a variety of activities involving the three elements stated below as well as receive hands-on experience of the practice of medicine itself.

RESEARCH
The Jackson Orthopaedic Foundation may be involved in  clinical research trials at the time of the program. The interns will be assigned to his research teams and will play a part in study development. This will include participating in evaluating new protocols and in new protocol development. In addition, there are often chart reviews, case studies, and literature searches that need to be completed by the interns.

PATIENT OUTREACH AND EDUCATION
The interns will play an active role in the Jackson Orthopaedic Foundation Joint School program. This program has been designed as a patient and family educational resource for those undergoing total knee and hip replacement surgery. In addition, interns may be asked to help with the continuing medical education program. As a continuing medical education provider we offer classes for physicians, nurses, surgical technicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, physician assistants, and other allied health care professionals.

EXPERIENCE IN MEDICINE
The interns are immersed in the clinic of a busy orthopaedic joint replacement practice. They shadow not only the orthopaedic surgeon, but also the nurse practitioner, clinical research coordinator, x-ray technician, surgery scheduler, office manager, patient educator, and medical assistants. The interns often play a vital role in preparing patients for total joint replacement surgery, educating them about the process, taking medical histories, and explaining radiographic results with them and their families. In addition, they help apply and remove casts, prepare intra-articular injections, and develop x-rays. We insist that they go so far as to master the intricacies of medical insurance plans and billing procedures in this age of managed care and changing reimbursements.

REQUIREMENTS
It is required that all interns:
-Have completed at least one year of undergraduate education
-Are mature, honest, punctual, and reliable
-Are interested, passionate, and dedicated
-Are willing and able to work as a member of a diverse team

-Are willing and able to devote the necessary hours required for the entire length of the program
-Produce a paper, project, or presentation as the culminating event of his/her summer experience
