The Jackson Orthopaedic Foundation is highly dedicated to researching new treatments for
various orthopaedic conditions. We are quickly expanding our research
department to accommodate further research studies.
Research studies are necessary for better
understanding of various conditions so that more effective treatment
options can be made accessible. As such, your continued support in this
field is greatly appreciated by us and your neighbors who finds hope in
new advances to ease their conditions.

CURRENTLY ENROLLING STUDIES:
The following studies are presently looking for active patient
involvement. If you are interested in any of these studies, please
contact Aya Chow, Research and Education Manager, at (510) 238-4851 x
101 or
via email at
achow@arthritis-center.org.
There are no actively
enrolling studies at this time.
We thank all those who have, are currently, or considering enrollment
in our studies.
Without your participation,
none of these studies would be possible! If you believe you may be a
candidate for any of the studies listed above, please give us a call at (510) 238-4851 ext 101 or email

CLOSED TO ENROLLMENT STUDIES:
The following studies are closed to patient enrollment and currently
compiling study results. Thank you to everyone who participated.
The
OVATION Study
The OVATION Study is a post
market study determining the effectiveness of a viscosupplementation
device called Synvisc® for treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Hip. As
osteoarthritis advances, the synovial fluid found in the body's joint
areas may be negatively distrupted. Viscosupplementation aims to mimic
the properties of this natural fluid to reduce pain. Synvisc® is already
approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United
States for use in the knee.
The
Carbojet Study
The Carbojet Study's
goal was to quantify cement penetration depth and radiolucent line
thickness in a cohort of patients on which Carbon Dioxide (CO2) lavage
was used.
The
Celebrex Study
The Celebrex Study
aimed to evaluate differences in blood pressure control in patients with
preexisting co-morbid arthritis and hypertension who are being initiated
on a COX-2 specific NSAID medication.
The Flextra Trial
The Flextra Trial is a post market study reviewing a “blood thinning” medicine called Arixtra® (generic name: Fondaparinux Sodium). Blood thinning medications are very important following major surgery, such as a total hip or knee replacement, because they help limit the incidence of blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots, can lead to life-threatening conditions such as pulmonary embolisms. The purpose of the research study is to look at how well Arixtra® works in preventing blood clots and how safe Arixtra® is if taken more than six hours after elective orthopedic hip and knee surgery. For more information about Arixtra, go to http://www.arixtraus.com/home.asp or speak with your physician.
MOVE Study
Conducted through
the Stanford University School of Medicine, the MOVE study examines the long-term effectiveness of
viscosupplementation.
The study involves comparing the presence of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) patients treated with and without
viscosupplementation.
Thank you to everyone who inquired about participating in the MOVE study. Enrollment is now closed.

Metasul Study
Aseptic loosening of the acetabular cup caused by polyethylene wear is one
of the main long-term complications of total hip arthroplasty today.
Research has shown that in comparison to polyethyene-metal composites, the
metal-on-metal prosthesis technology produces much less wear debris. Based
on such promising long-term clinical results, the metal-metal composite once
again is of great interest for total hip prostheses.
The objective of the Metasul study is to determine the safety and efficacy
of the METASUL Acetabular Insert and METASUL Femoral Head when used with the
APR Acetabular Shell and APR II-T Non-Porous Femoral Stem in cemented total
hip arthroplasty for the treatment of noninflammatory joint disease.
This study has finished in its entirety. If
you are interested in the outcome of the study when it becomes
available to the public, please phone or forward your mailing address to
achow@arthritis-center.org.
